Community Peace Radio Show #46

Date: 19 September 2009

Topic: The Bicycling Super Heroes!

Participants:  Super Chili (like red and green), Farfalou (an eclectic mix of different things all together), Infinity Kid (infinite love and infinite possibility), True Blue (true to my true nature and the true nature of others I meet), Zing (Blazing Echidna, founder of Super Heroes) (to enliven, to bring to life, to bring a little zest), Ruby Hummingbird (friend to all birds), Michaela Rodriguez (NMHU SSW student, LVP&J Center intern), Dennis Lopez (NMHU SSW student, LVP&J Center intern), and Arielle Hawney (via phone, giving us the weather report and more).  Other Super Heroes on the NM bike ride, but who couldn't be "live" in the studio with us, include Mindful Chaos, One Earth Nun, Metta the Mime, and Crimson Seeker.

Host: Pat Leahan

Summary: Our community (Las Vegas, NM) received a surprise visit this week from the amazing bicycling Super Heroes. These are folks who bike around to different towns and spontaneously offer community service. Today, we get to hang out with some of the Super Heroes "live" in the studio. We learn the history of this incredible group of loving folks, the meaning behind their Super Hero names, descriptions of their colorful Super Hero garb, and the essence behind why they do what they do. It all started 10 years ago with a bike ride from Seattle to Boston, with 7 folks who wanted to re-define what it means to be a Super Hero by doing service in each community they visited. It has since grown to 18 rides in 5 countries and 23 states, with over 500 bicycling Super Heroes (with an age range of 2 years to 78 years old). Zing explains that we all have Super Hero qualities in us, and they take time to honor some of the local Super Heroes they meet in the communities they visit. He shares two quotes that help define the intention of their ride: "Love one another," and "You must be the change you wish to see in the world" (words of wisdom from Jesus and Gandhi). Zing, encouraging each of us to take just 10 minutes a week to do service, says, "If everyone helped out, we'd transform the world." These bicycling Super Heroes transformed our little world here today.

Pat's Extra Notes:
It was great to have some local Las Vegas Super Heroes call in during the show.
In true Super Hero fashion, our guests motivated us to transform our after-show into a clean-up of the Plaza Park and Bridge Street, thanks to a call for help from one of our own local Super Heroes, Tito Chavez.

Thank you, David, for our CPR intro music:
