Community Peace Radio - Kathy Kelly and Mary Burton Riseley PDF Print

Community Peace Radio Show # 65

Date: 13 February 2010

Topic: Voices for Creative Nonviolence -- "Eyewitness to War, Witness for Peace"

Participants: Kathy Kelly (Co-Coordinator, Voices for Creative Nonviolence), Mary Burton Riseley (Friends Committee on National Legislation)

Co-Hosts: Pat Leahan, Michaela Rodriguez, Arielle Hawney (via phone)

Summary: Kathy Kelly co-coordinates Voices for Creative Nonviolence, an organization that believes that "where you stand determines what you see."  She has recently visited Gaza (during Operation Cast Lead, Jan 2009) and Pakistan (May-June, 2009), and was in Iraq during the U.S.-led "Shock and Awe" bombing campaign. She talks with us about her experiences and eyewitness accounts of the realities and sorrows of war.

As a co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness, Kathy and her colleague Mary Burton Riseley and others, helped form 70 delegations, from 1996 – 2003, to bring medicine to children and families in Iraq because the country was being severely affected by the U.S.-led blockade.  Kathy and Mary believe that non-violence involves simplicity, service, sharing of resources and nonviolent direct action in resistance to war and oppression.

Mary, in a pre-sentencing statement on 4 Feb. 2008 for her arrest at an Army Intelligence Center (Ft. Huachuca), stated: "The problems that humanity faces now are so vast that they can only be solved by working together, by making our scope of justice into an 'I that is we,' with 'we' including every human being, everywhere on the planet."
