Community Peace Radio - Police Accountability PDF Print

Community Peace Radio Show #36

Date:  11 July 2009

Topic:  Police Accountability, Police Oversight Committees

Participants:  Paul Skotchdopole (Investigator, Albuquerque Police Oversight Board), Daniel Patterson (Brown University student), Trace T., Frank Susman (NM-ACLU via phone)

Host:  Pat Leahan

Summary:  We discuss the importance of police oversight. Paul explains how the Albuquerque, NM model works. The Albuquerque Police Department has their complaint forms available throughout the city, on their website, or the forms can be mailed to your home (and there is no requirement for notarization or driver's license). The NM ACLU explains some key components that are needed for setting up a police accountability commission. Studies show that lawsuits decrease in communities with police oversight boards. Other benefits are also discussed. Another model that is mentioned is a local, citizen-led, grassroots oversight commission, which does not involve political appointments for membership.

Pat's Extra Notes:
Arielle reports on the 90-100 degree F. weather we're having, including record high temps around NM.
