Date: 27 February 2010

Topic: Women of Atenco

Participants: Carrol Pearson (Amnesty International Local Group # 463), Lea Jacqueline Kliem (UWC-USA student from Germany), Regina Diaz Salgado (UWC-USA student from Mexico)

Co-Hosts: Pat Leahan, Arielle Hawney (via phone)

Summary: In the lead-up to International Women's Day, we interview local women who are helping to organize actions around a serious human rights issue. They explain to us that a group of women from San Salvador Atenco, Mexico were brutally tortured by Mexican law enforcement nearly 4 years ago, and justice has yet to occur. To bring attention to the matter, Amnesty International groups and others are organizing actions, gathering letters of support, and communicating with Mexican authorities in support of the Women of Atenco. We play an 8-minute audio clip from Amy Goodman's Democracy Now to provide some background information. Our local guests in the studio share the story of Barbara Italia Mendez, one of the Atenco women who was abused and refuses to give up in her search for justice. They also provide our listeners with actions we can take to help in the pursuit of justice for the Women of San Salvador, Atenco.
