Youth Radio - 110th Annual Christmas Bird Count PDF Print

Community Peace Radio Show #60

Date: 2 January 2010

Topic: 110th Annual Christmas Bird Count

Participants: Lea Knutson (Executive Director, Citizens' Watershed Monitoring Team), Jamie Knutson (17 year old wildlife science surveyor), Cassidy Ruge (14 year old "crazy birder")

Co-Hosts: Pat Leahan, Curtis Sollohub, Arielle Hawney (weather report via phone)

Summary: Lea, Jamie and Cassidy report "live" from the field as they do the annual Christmas Bird Count. Cassidy gives us some good tips on how to begin learning to identify birds. He gives great advice for newcomers and novices. We play various bird calls, some of which are heard here in San Miguel County, NM. Cassidy and Jamie report on what birds they're seeing and officially counting for the CBC database today. Jamie talks about the importance of butterfly counts, frog watches, beaver surveys, wildlife science surveys, watershed monitoring and other ways to track the health of the wildlife and our environment. We end with a tune -- "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along."
