Participants: Alan Wicks (UWC-USA Faculty), Robin Ediger-Seto (local student and good friend of Community Peace Radio), Lea Knutson (Annual CBC Local Coordinator, Citizens Watershed Monitoring Team Director) (via phone), Cassidy Ruge (local student and 13-year-old "bird nut", birding since age 6) (via phone)
Co-Hosts: Pat Leahan, Curtis Sollohub, Broadus Mobbs
Summary: Lea and Cassidy call in from the field (along the Gallinas River) during the Annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in Las Vegas, NM. The CBC is the longest standing wildlife census in the U.S., happening since 1900. This is the best way to catalog bird populations over time, and how birds are faring in the changing environment from year to year. During the second half of the show, Alan shares about the birds he observes around the UWC-USA campus, and Robin talks about the birds he is familiar with in India. We compare the calls of the bald eagle and hawk, and we get to hear what a kittiwake sounds like.
